Mason came down with a cold a few days ago and since we are only days away from no insurance (new job, waiting period), I decided I should take him to the doctor. I was 99% sure that the doc would say he had an ear infection or just a cold, no big deal. Boy was I wrong!! After the nurse asked all the standard questions she said she was going to check the oxygen level in his blood. She left the room and came back with this hand held machine and put this thing on his big toe. After holding it there for a few minutes she said it looked like his oxygen level was low, a 93. I was thinking "What the heck does that mean??" Anyways, she left the room and said the doctor would be in shortly. The doctor came in and asked all the same questions and then listened to Mason breathe with her stethoscope. She asked me if he had ever wheezed before and I said no. Then when she was done she told me she wanted to do a breathing treatment on him and then come back and listen to him breathe again. Okay, I thought, but what does this mean?? So, the nurse came back in with the nebulizer and dumped the liquid stuff in and started the treatment. I asked her what this all meant and she said all she knew was that Mason was wheezing and the doctor wanted to give him a breathing treatment and then check him again. So, after 15 minutes or more of the vapor thingy they checked his oxygen level again and it was 96-97. The doctor said she was sending me home with the nebulizer and I should give him 3 breathing treatments a day for 3 days, then 2 a day, then once a day. She said he just has a cold, but because of the wheezing and low oxygen level in his blood, she doesn't want it to turn into pneumonia or severe bronchitis. YIKES!! What the heck, I'm thinking. I only have two more days of insurance, I'm leaving to go out of town in three days, and this is waaaay more than I bargained for!!!
That was the last straw. I got out of the doctor's office and lost it! The flood gates were open and I had an emotional meltdown. Good times.
So, now we are the proud owner of a nebulizer. And I get to haul it with me to Utah. And I am praying that Mason will start sounding better real soon because so far, he sounds the same. I am really glad I went to the doctor on Friday with Mason or this might be a different story in about a week. Let's hope we are on the tail end of this nasty cold!!

Poor little guy! At least you found out before it took a turn for the worst. I hope the breathing treatment goes better.
Tanner's had a bad cough and now I'm paranoid...
I hope your trip to Utah goes well!!
It might be worth purchasing cobra for a month...just in case...before the next insurance kicks in.
We miss you guys!! I'm glad you'll be at the wedding in July!
OHHHHH how I can sympathize! I've started taken Nat's nebulizer on every trip we take, just to be safe. It's actually kind of a relief, at the same time, that you have that at the ready in case he has another attack again. But it is the FREAKIEST feeling. Nat was within one percentage point of having to be hospitalized, his oxygen level had been so low when they did that toe test. You feel so vulnerable! Oh, baby Mason, get better, cutie! And I hope you're having a GREAT trip.
KRISTAN!! OH NO! I am so sorry! First of all that little Mason is sick, poor guy! But how stressful for you!! I so hope he gets better soon! And that somehow you get a little relaxation on your vacation!!! Can't wait til we are in the same state!!! Miss You!
